Step Sunday at Verso St Albans

On Sunday Mary and I went and spent the morning with Verso St Albans (formally The Vineyard Church St Albans) youth. We have been doing visits every three to four months looking at how faith can help us in our weeks, especially when we’re in school.

Our anchor verse for this session was 'Then the Lord God said, “It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make a helper fit for him.”' Genesis 2:18. We explained how the first thing God said wasn’t good about creation was for Adam to be lonely, and that this shows us that God never planned for us be lonely or isolated. Often young people can feel like this, with the rise of social media we have seen a rise in people becoming more disconnected. We spoke to the group about how important being in community is and how the friendships we make on a Sunday can encourage and support us during our weeks. The focus for this session was to create an environment where the young people could get to know each other better.

We started with Bingo, where you go around and find different people who match the statements on the sheet. This helped the young people to go and talk to different people who they might not usually talk to. We then got them to pair off with someone from their Year Group who they don’t know very well and got them to ask a series of questions, once they knew each other better they then designed a logo for them.

These simple activities created a wonderful atmosphere across the Youth Space full of conversations and laughter, with relational growth at the heart of it all. Paul the Youth Pastor at Verso St Albans reflected “It was great having Charlotte and Mary from the Step team come and join us in youth yesterday, and encouraging us in the value of the relationships that we have with each other within our church family, and we look forward to them joining us again soon.”
