Who will take the lead?

Twelve students joined the course team this week. It was the first time we are running the Leadership Course in St George’s School.
As one of the facilitators I met the group of 4 students I will be working with for the next 6 weeks.
We introduced ourselves to each-other and then the group were quickly set off on a bingo task. (see image below)

In week 1 and 2 there is a group challenge that we set for the students. This week I was looking out for how they were working as a team. Who is willing to give direction, who would rather be lead, who was confident, who thought outside the box, who was contributing and who was observing.

A member of our team lead the session and I had the privilege to listen, watch and take note of how my group got on with the task.

It was fascinating to see small decisions made to either contribute or not, to value one’s opinion or hold back.

I observed one young lady observe as the others discussed a plan, she waited till their ideas ran their course and then without hesitation began to work on some of the bingo tasks that remained on the sheet. One by one the group ticked them off. She had had a plan, she waited and then she took over the direction, the decision making, the leadership.

Leadership is not something that is only for the CEO or the boss but something that is part of how we all operate. Where decisions need to be made, there you will find leadership.

What if as we journey with these 12 young people we as team not only watch them flourish into a greater awareness of themselves but we as facilitators will also. What if we as ‘grown-ups’ a few steps ahead can impart insights and perspective that will see them walk confidently knowing they are already leaders. What if they can in the roles that their life journey will see them hold step fully into the opportunities they have in front of them.

Watch this space, there are 5 more weeks for this course and many other courses running in 2023.
If you are interested in enquiring about joining our team as a facilitator please speak to the Step team.
