Helping young people to see that they matter…

You have hopefully heard about our iMatter journal before, it is a resource we have been using for a couple of years now. Whilst I was creating the resource one of my further plans was to create a 7 week mentoring program which gave young people space to delve further into exploring their self-esteem and identity and offered them helpful tools which a Step team member could guide them through.

After trialling the mentoring program on a couple of groups last year I made some amendments and over this term I’ve been working with a growing number of different Townsend Yr9 groups. It is great to see the mentoring benefiting so many students already and I know it’s having a similar impact in other schools.

This week I had a particularly impactful moment where a student arrived and felt able to share that they hadn’t had the best couple of weeks. We happened to be on the creative week and so we had an extended session together being artistic and creative and exploring how we can express how we are feeling through creativity. I love that the iMatter mentoring space is a flexible one and also a support space for students who need it.
