How do I know I matter?

If you have been keeping up with Step’s latest news over the last few years then you will probably have heard the term iMatter before. iMatter is a phrase Step has coined and has become one of our core values and something we try to share something of with the young people we see in each and every lesson/activity that we run. Now we’ve taken this one step further and so I am excited in introduce our brand new resources for young people: “My iMatter Journal.”

The journal aims to embody the values of iMatter - I am loved, I am created, I am connected, I am eternal and I am responsible - whilst also bringing a wide variety of activities that help to improve self-esteem. Each of the five iMatter statements is linked to an overarching theme which the activities in that section then link to. Both the themes and activities are shown via research to help improve self-esteem.

The journal begins by introducing iMatter in more detail to the young person reading (I have included a short synopsis below for those of you who would also like a reminder) as well as giving them a starter activity to help them begin to think about themselves. Within the journal are activities such as: thankfulness journaling, nature spotting, reflecting on trusted allies, creative space, self talk and many more. Each page has a Bible verse with some wise words linked to the activity on the page which can be reflected on. On some pages the verse is highlighted in a torch for some wise words which we particularly want to shine a light on. That being said the journal as with everything Step is completely accessible for any young person whether from a faith background or not. With so many activities and things to think about our hope is to get these journals to as many young people as possible, so that they have the opportunity to explore and increase their own self-esteem.

Some plans of how we will use these journals within schools have already begun to take shape so watch this space for more details on how we are planning to do this sometime within the autumn term…

(iMatter offers young people a different place to find their value, identity and build their self-esteem on. The world often tells us our value is equal to “what others think of us” and “what we achieve.” This can be problematic particularly if you find yourself going through struggle with friends or have had some disappointing feedback in an assessment. iMatter on the other hand says our value is equal to “what God says about us (in the Bible)” and “what Jesus did for us (the cross).” This offers a firm foundation for our value and self-esteem as whatever life throws at us these are fixed, unchanging foundations that we can put our hope and trust in if we choose to).
